After moving from Los Angeles to New York a year ago, Solange Knowles didn't
do the Manhattan thing like her famous sister and brother-in-law, Beyonce and
Jay-Z. Instead, she and her family took up residence in the hipper-by-the-minute
borough of Brooklyn. The 26-year-old musician, DJ, and model now resides in the
eclectic neighborhood of Carroll Gardens along with her boyfriend, music
director Alan Ferguson, and her 7-year-old son Julez. She recently opened up
their brownstone to
Elle.
"I had a moment when I looked at my closet and I was like, 'Whoa, I really
don't have any basics.' And with my house, I wanted to find a balance of having
great colors and patterns but also a really livable, warm, serene space,"
Knowles tells
Elle.

White walls and white bedding lend themselves to
the serene part of the house, while the "warmth" aspect gets a boost from wood
floors, embroidered pillows, and Moroccan rugs, which came straight from the
source. ("We bought two when we were there because they're gorgeous and super
cheap!") As for the art hanging on her walls, Knowles skips the super-stuffy
galleries in favor of finds at exhibitions at the self-proclaimed "affordable"
Recession Art shop, and pieces she picks up during trips back to her home state
of Texas.
With sister Bey just across the river now, she and baby Blue Ivy are able to
pop over for family dinners, though Knowles also hosts more raucous events: "My
parties start off mellow," she says, "then get loud."
